History of Release

Release has a proud history of providing services for and defending the rights of drug users for over 40 years. Release was founded in 1967 by Caroline Coon and Rufus Harris, when a telephone Helpline to advise callers on drugs law was set up. Civil liberties have always been central to the principles of Release and over the years its activities have been shaped by the shifting challenges posed to justice and liberty in the UK.
Release’s current professional and disciplined approach reflects the demands of the contemporary charity sector, but its edgy style and broad appeal remain, ensuring that it continues to meet the needs of some of the most marginalised members of society.
