Response to the Consultation to expand access to take-home naloxone supplies

Release contributed to the Government’s consultation on expanding access to take-home naloxone. As a tried-and-tested medicine in reversing overdoses, its recognition as a pharmacy medicine (rather than a prescription-only medicine) would ensure that more people are able to access it whenever and wherever it is needed.

Naloxone is needed across multiple and diverse populations: this includes homeless people (and those working in services that engage with homeless communities), young people who may be inadvertently exposed to opioid use (due to a contaminated drug supply), among other groups.
